California 1 and a Lesson in Pronunciation

Take a long drive with me
On California One
On California One
And the road a-winding goes
From golden gate to roaring cliff-side
And the light is softly low
As our hearts become sweetly untied
Beneath the sun of California One
-Youth and Beauty Brigade, The Decemberists
The open road screams with potential! Adventure! Oh, and wine. Instead of the usual suspects (Napa can be dreadfully hot in August, my delicate rosebuds), try heading south for your sipping. Paso Robles is a heavily laden grape vine, ripe for your tasting. Why they pronounce it "Pass-o Row Bulls," however, is anyone's guess. Regardless, your shortlist:

Stay
at the Hotel Cheval
Eat at Artisan, Farmstand 46
Taste at Turley (classic California Zin, the Uberroth is to die), Tablas Creek, L'Aventure, and RN Estate
Dip into the olive oil tasting at Pasolivo
Meet the baby goats at Happy Acres Family Farm
